GRE

The Graduate Record Examination is of two types- The General GRE and The Subject GRE.

Admission Requirements :

The GRE Subject Tests are designed to help graduate school admission committees and fellowship sponsors assess the qualifications of applicants in specific fields of study. The Subject Tests are offered in November, December and April. The test Fee is $150. These Advanced Subject tests are offered as paper-based tests and are given in eight areas: biochemistry, cell and molecular biology; biology; chemistry; computer science; literature in English; mathematics; physics; and psychology.

The general GRE is a Standardized test that measures Verbal, Mathematical and Analytical Writing skills. It is intended to help the graduate schools (of all fields other than business) assess the potential of applicants for advanced study. Nearly 300 universities in the US require GRE scores from each applicant. The GRE tests the fundamental skills – Reasoning and Comprehension included – and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study.

In India we have only the Computer Based Gre Test. The test is scored out of 1600 and 6 points for AW section.

Who administers TOEFL and GRE?

Both the Tests are developed and administered by the US-based “Educational Testing Service” (ETS) under the direction of the Graduate Record Examination Board, a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. In India, the agency which represents ETS is the “Sylvan Testing Services Pvt Ltd” which administers the test at 9 centres in the country: Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Trivendrum.

When is the GRE held?

All-round-the-year. The test is administered in the above cities five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. Registering at least 15 days in advance is mandatory. The test lasts roughly three-and-a-half hours, and most centres offer two slots : 9 A.M. and 2 P.M.

Test fees for GRE may vary according to the country in which you take the test. In India, this fee is US $140 (approx Rs. 6440), payable at the time of registration. You cannot pay in Indian Rupees. The fees has to be paid through a US Dollar denominated draft, made out in favor of “ETS – GRE” payable in the U.S.

Content and Format of the GRE

GRE Consists of three sections-Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing Section

The Verbal Section lasts 30 minutes and has 30 Questions. The Questions are of four different types-Antonyms, Analogies, Sentence Completions and Reading Comprehension Quantitative Section is of 45 minutes and has 28 Questions. It tests the basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis

Analytical Writing

This Section consists of two analytical writing tasks: a 45-minute “Present Your Perspective on an Issue” task and a 30-minute “Analyze an Argument” task. The “Issue” task states an opinion on an issue of general interest and asks test takers to address the issue from any perspective(s) they wish, as long as they provide relevant reasons and examples to explain and support their views. The “Argument” task presents a different challenge-it requires test takers to critique an argument by discussing how well-reasoned they find it. Test takers are asked to consider the logical soundness of the argument rather than to agree or disagree with the position it presents. These two tasks are complementary in that the first requires the writer to construct a personal argument about an issue, and the second requires a critique of someone else’s argument by assessing its claims.
